Most Ugandans only see a doctor when something feels wrong. By then, diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, or hepatitis B may have been silently progressing for years. An annual lab check-up is the single most affordable way to catch these problems early, and almost every test on this list costs less than a single weekly grocery run.
Here are the ten tests that give the highest health value for the money in Uganda today, with realistic Kampala prices and what each one actually tells you.
1. Full Blood Count (FBC / CBC)
UGX 21,900Counts your red cells, white cells, and platelets. Catches anaemia (very common in Ugandan women), hidden infections, and clotting problems. The single most useful general screening test. Results in 1–2 hours.
2. Malaria Microscopy or Rapid Test
From UGX 11,900If you've had a fever in the last 48 hours, this is non-negotiable. Microscopy identifies the parasite type so the doctor can prescribe the right ACT. Rapid tests give a yes/no in under an hour for UGX 18,900.
3. HbA1c, Diabetes Check
UGX 69,900The single best test for diabetes. Unlike a morning sugar reading, HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the last 3 months, so you can't "eat well the day before" and cheat the result. Everyone over 35 should take this annually. Book online.
4. Lipid Profile, Cholesterol & Heart Risk
UGX 93,900Measures cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides. High cholesterol is the leading driver of heart attacks and strokes, and there are no symptoms until it's late. Recommended every 1–2 years for adults over 30.
5. Kidney Function (Urea + Creatinine)
UGX 23,900Checks how well your kidneys filter waste. Kidney disease in Uganda is often caught at end-stage when transplant or dialysis is the only option. This UGX 24,000 test catches it years earlier when lifestyle change can still reverse it.
6. Liver Function Test (LFT)
UGX 64,900Measures liver enzymes (ALT, AST), bilirubin, and ALP. Catches early hepatitis, fatty liver disease, alcohol damage, and drug toxicity. Recommended yearly if you drink regularly or take long-term medication.
7. HIV Test
From UGX 19,900Rapid HIV tests are quick, accurate, and confidential. The Ministry of Health recommends every sexually active adult test at least once a year. Treatment today means an undetectable viral load, but only if you know your status.
8. Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HbSAg)
UGX 24,900Hepatitis B is endemic across Uganda and the leading cause of liver cancer here. The rapid test takes an hour and is one of the cheapest disease screenings available. If positive, you can start treatment that prevents long-term liver damage.
9. Thyroid Profile (TFT, T3, T4, TSH)
UGX 119,900Thyroid disorders affect mood, weight, energy, heart rate, and fertility. They're underdiagnosed in Uganda because the symptoms (tiredness, weight change) look like everyday stress. One test rules them in or out.
10. Urinalysis (Routine)
UGX 14,900A simple urine dipstick + microscopy that catches urinary tract infections, hidden blood (a sign of kidney stones or bladder problems), early diabetes (sugar in urine), and pregnancy. The cheapest test on this list, and one of the most informative.

Most labs in Kampala will draw a single blood sample and run multiple tests off it, so you only get pricked once. The total cost for the full annual check above lands around UGX 470,000 (~$130), but most people only need 4–5 depending on age and risk. For under UGX 200,000 you can rule out the diseases most likely to kill or disable a Ugandan adult.
When to skip the annual check and test immediately
Some symptoms shouldn't wait for an annual schedule. Test right away if you have:
- Fever lasting more than 48 hours, malaria, typhoid, or other infection.
- Unexplained weight loss, diabetes, HIV, thyroid, cancer.
- Persistent tiredness, anaemia, thyroid, kidney issues.
- Frequent urination + thirst, undiagnosed diabetes.
- Yellow eyes or dark urine, hepatitis or liver damage.
- Blood in urine or stool, needs urgent investigation.
